The link above takes you to a document that is compiled from the class that ended 3-2015. Students were asked to write a final paper that not only described “What the New Me is going to look like”, but also how they intended to get there. When you read these words, think about how YOUR organization would be improved if these students were part of your organization!!!
Each of our Distance Learning classes (Entry Level Supervisor and Executive Coaching) end with an activity entitled “Leave a Legacy”. This assignment allows current students to leave a message to future students about the road to success in the program. Here is a sampling from real students, students that will be making a difference in their organizations and their lives.

This program was offered to our staff and I agreed to take it. After getting the email of the start date and actually looking over the syllabus, I immediately had second thoughts due to my schedule and the amount of work involved and I have never taken an online course before. In other words, I was basically searched for EXCUSES!
I made the decision to come into the course with an open mind and vowed to do my best. I would have to say that it was the best choices that I’ve ever made. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. There’s definitely a lot of information that’s given to you. But going into this program with an open mind and early preparation is definitely the key to success. I honestly took the tools that were given to me and I utilized them on the job, with family and friends. It honestly surprised me how effective it was. I was amazed with the simplicity of it all especially when it came down to communication.
My advice would be to come in with an open mind. Read the chapters before each sessions. Participate and be honest with yourself throughout the course and the biggest and most crucial part, is have fun.
Robert

Excellent course but you have to be honest in your answers and you will get real benifit from it. Just put aside the time, there is plenty of support as the course is extremely well ran.
Donal
===============================================================
Take the time to read the texts in advance if possible, and reread as the class progresses.
Be honest in public postings and in private assignments. True self actualization will occur if you are honest with yourself, about yourself, and with others. I found it refreshing to be critical of myself in a public forum and not be judged, but rather, encouraged.
Anthony

The material in the course will only help if you want it to. There are some serious reality checks that you will be forced to make. You may not like the way that you feel over some of the material. The best part is that these are choices. You can choose how you feel. You can adapt. You can learn. You can choose to be more effective in how you deal with life. It’s all up to you.

I concur with my classmates as advanced reading is a must. There will be time to read along during the class, but get as much reading done as you can early. The course work will open your eyes about you and how you see yourself. be open minded and enjoy it! you will need discipline as it is a very long course that requires attention every week. Finish the course once you start, I’m reminded of my High School Football coaching where we have a sign over the exit of one of the doors “Winners never quit, Quitters never win”. This is so true in life and in this course.
You will learn allot about yourself and how you can improve in so many areas. Begin it and change your life and outlook forever!
Rodney

The key to this course is to remain open to yourself and the class other wise you will gain nothing from this class. This course is about self development and only honesty will allow you to grow as a person. I learned personally where I am in life and where I need to be but most important is learning the tools to reach the new goals I have set during this class. The largest challenge we all fact is using what we have learned and not letting it go to wast. Good luck to my fellow classmates and all of the future students.
Brandon

I would encourage future students to complete the assigned reading. As a participant in the class you will need to be honest about yourself personal and business related. You will need to complete assignments and participate in the discussions, don’t just post an answer. You will get more out of the discussion questions and learn more about yourself and others by responding to your classmates.
If you don’t understand any part of the class, be assertive and contact Mr. Roemmelt. He has a wealth knowledge to share with everyone and provides useful feedback on your graded assignments. Excellent course!!!

This is a great class if you take it seriously. It requires you to look within yourself and honestly evaluate who you are and what you believe about yourself and your ability to be a leader. If you are not willing to do this, please stop now because you will be bored and will not get anything from the material.
Read the books! I used Audible.com and was able to go through them several times. I found several things that I could improve about myself. The assignments emphasized what the books’ authors taught and helped direct me to discover ways I could make the needed changes. I still have room for improvement, but that is the spice of life, right?

In fire and rescue we often establish safe environments with quality instructors where we can take chances, make mistakes, and learn with little risk. This is one of those times. You must be willing to go out of your comfort zone and if you do, the rewards will change you. If you can become a better supervisor, the areas that change will affect your life are currently beyond comprehension. Trust in the program and the rewards will be exponential.

“Before someone can become a great leader they must first become a great person.” Many individuals have the desire to become leaders within their Fire/EMS agencies. I applaud you for attending taking the first step by attending this course. This course is about self-discovery. Please be brutally honest with yourself as you complete the course work. By doing so you will begin to learn so much about who you are and you’ll begin to understand how others see you. Only then can you initiate the process of change within yourself. It is this recognition of self and the subsequent actions that will lead you down the road to becoming a great leader.

Have an open mind, and actually give an honest effort.
When I realized what this class was about, I second guessed my decision to take it. This was not what I anticipated. Being who I am, I kept with it, and actually learned a lot more useful information than I probably would have if the class had actually been along the lines I anticipated.

Great program that will really change your outlook. However, you will only get out as much as you’re willing to put into it.

This course will take you to places in your personality that you’ve never explored before. It will cause you to look internally, as well as interdependently. You cannot excel as a manager, until you excel as a person first. Take your time, enjoy the readings, don’t get behind, and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy anything that comes out of the mouth of the Late Great Stephen Covey.

Work hard, fight for what you believe in, use your voice, be emotional, and make sure that you have a balance between work and home.

While there seems to be a lot of work, there is, but don’t get discouraged. Take your time to understand the meanings of each week and then practice what you’ve learned. Don’t get behind and rush through your studies, start preparing at the beginning of the week. The work you put into it is how much you can get out of it!

This course and it’s texts are one of life’s rare events that will leave an indelible mark on your life, if you allow it to. Many of the concepts that you will experience will speak directly to events and experiences form your own personal life and will often make you rethink the manner in which you addressed them at the time. My advise is to set aside your preconceptions or hesitations and allow yourself to truly open up in this class. In many ways opening up in these assignments serves a self therapeutic role, as they will be the first times you have expressed them outside your own mind.

Hello all
To those who are about to or will take this class my advice to you is to read all the material and participate. When I say participate I don’t mean go through the motions to get the assignment done. I mean really do the assignment. Go through the examples in the books and really do them. You will be surprised at what you find. It will help you I promise. It is a great course and even if it seems tough at times stick with it, it will pay off in the end. Keep up with your assignments and try not to get behind. Each assignment needs a specific amount of time and you need to devote that time to the assignment to get the benefit. Also get the 7 habits as an audiobook and listen to it regularly. It helps and refreshes things read.
That’s all I’ve got and good luck!

Make sure you sit down and read the assignments. Think about what you would do in a similar situation and then be honest with yourself and the class. If you allow yourself to learn from this class, you will grow as a leader. If I had to sum it up in a few words it would be this; Be honest with yourself and let integrity guide you.

Start to read the book the day you get them. Read them again. Download the audio versions and listen to them. Keep an open mind. If you do not open yourself to change and reflection don’t take the class. If you don’t expect change you will not be surprised, you will be bored and continue to think you are perfect. Unlike any other class I have taken, this is not about the subject, it is about the student. Real life knowledge that will help you grow in every aspect of your life if you let it. If you are looking to take something with you that can help you in your career, in your life, this is it. No regurgitation of a specific subject that you read about. This is writing about your thoughts, life experience and growing from it. Truly getting out what you put in. If you are not going to commit yourself, let someone else take your place. Commit, and I don’t think you will regret it, regardless of where you ride, work or are assigned.

This was a very informative class on self awareness and is a wake up call on so many things tou don’t realize. Make sure you read the assigning readings prior to start of class and then go back and focus on certain parts during the assignments. Don’t let yourself get behind on assignments or wait til the last day to get them turned in. This seem to cause rushing through and poss. not gaining as much as you could if you focused more.

To excel in this EQ and EMS class you should make a calendar with reminders to do each lesson in parts so everything gets done on time. The reading is very enjoyable so get started early and then plan time to review it as you start working on the papers. The class involves reading, internet researches, and writing so practice those things a little before class so you have that squared away when class starts. I enjoyed all the personal reflections and opportunity to look within to see how to improve work as an EMS supervisor.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Do the reading and be honest with yourself. Really take the time to think of your feelings and your views. Introspection is key.

First things first … keep an open mind, be honest with yourself and realize that no one in this world is perfect. Take the time to really reflect on how you deal with things in life and learn as much about yourself as you can, to get the most out of this class. The books and assignments are outstanding and the EQ assessment is invaluable. If you are receptive and do the work, you will have all tools you need to make positive change in your life and the lives of others.

The biggest part is to stay on top of the work. Don’t fall behind, doing the assignments with the class is far more beneficial then completing them on your own a week late.
Other than that work with an open mind, this class will make you think about yourself and your feelings. Be honest about them. When completing the assignments, complete them with the intent of the question in mind. Respond to the intent, not the basics of the question. Put the effort into this class that it deserves, you will get as much out as you put in.
